Pres. Duterte to Form an Independent Commission to Investigate SAF 44 Case

Philippine President Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte announced during a meeting with the relatives of SAF 44 victims that h will form an independent commission to investigate the controversial SAF 44 case. The botched operation for the capture of international terrorist Marwan caused the death of the 44 elite members of the Special Action Forces of the PNP.

According to Pres. Duterte the independent commission will investigate the SAF 44 case from the time Pres. Aquino hatched the plan up to the massacre of the elite members of the PNP during deadly clash in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.

During the meeting with the relatives and families of the 44 elite SAF members, Pres. Duterte stated that the former Pres. Aquino let his office as chief executive without addressing the SAF 44 issues.

Pres. Duterte would like to know and in fact he wanted to asked former Pres. Aquino why he sent SAF 44 to Mamasapano instead of sending the Philippine Army who are familiar with the terrain.

The first President from Mindanao would like to know also why is it that Pres. Aquino and DILG Sec. Mar Roxas kept the operations under wraps without informing the military.

Pres. Duterte also questioned the strategy of Pres. Aquino about the $5 million reward for the capture of Marwan and where did it go. He also wanted to know why the SAF44 are taking orders from suspended PNP Chief Purisima.

The former Mayor of Davao City also revealed that he was pissed off by Pres. Aquino's demeanor when he learned about the deaths of SAF44. He also told the former President to confess his sins to the nation.

Pres. Duterte also questioned the decision of the former President to reward only 2medals of valor despite the fact that all of the 44 SAF members died during the Mamasapano operation.

During the later portion of Pres. Duterte's speech he instructed PNP Chief Gen. Bato Dela Rosa on the conferment of medals of valor to all SAF44 heroes, which carries benefits for the families. Pres. Duterte also added that he will assign a day of remembrance for SAF44 and SAF44 Heroes.

You can pay at a restaurant by smiling at a camera

© Provided by Engadget As easy as it is to make purchases in the era of tap-to-pay services , it's about to get easier still. Alipay (which handles purchases for Chinese shopping giant Alibaba) has launched what it says is the first payment system that uses facial recognition to complete the sale. If you visit one of KFC's KPRO restaurants in Hangzhou, China, you can pay for your panini or salad by smiling at a camera-equipped kiosk -- you need to verify the purchase on your phone, but you don't have to punch in digits or bring your phone up to an NFC reader. The system (Smile to Pay) is purportedly resistant to spoofing with photos and other tricks. It relies on both depth-sensing cameras and a "likeness detection algorithm" to make sure it's really you. Reportedly, the technology is good enough that it can accurately identify people even when they're disguising themselves through makeup or wigs. You shouldn't have to worry about someone buying ...

DOF opposes tiered approach to tax on sugary drinks

© Provided by Mediamerge Corporation MONEY- Tax thumbnail The Department of Finance (DOF) is not amenable to Senator Juan Edgardo Angara's suggestion to implement the proposed levy on sugar sweetened beverages via a three-tier system. "We oppose the tiered approach. Meaning 'yung first seven grams will be tax free and then after that would be taxable," Finance Undersecretary Karl Chua said during the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) Economic Forum in Manila on Friday. Chua note the tiered approach may compel manufacturers to come up with smaller packaging. "So you can drink three of them with no taxes," the Finance official said. It will defeat the purpose of imposing excise tax on sugary drinks as a health measure, he added. During deliberations on the comprehensive tax reform bill, Angara floated the idea of implementing the excise tax on sugar sweetened beverages under a three-tier system to incentivize those who manufactu...
