Former Senator Bongbong Marcos has already paid the Supreme Court of the Philippines (SC) P36 million as initial payment for his election protest against Vice Pres. Leni Robredo despite the time circumstances and a short notice for him to pay for his protest.
According to the losing vice presidential bet former Sen. Marcos or BBM, the P36 million amount was pooled by 40 of Marcos "friends and supporters." The Marcos camp revealed that the amount is only half of the total payment required by the Supreme Court (SC), which sits as the Philippine Electoral Tribunal (PET).
In an official statement released by the Marcos camp through his lawyer George Erwin Garcia, they received the PET's order dated March 21, 2017 only on April 10, 2017, requiring Marcos to pay P66.223 million to cover for the cost of the retrieval of the ballot boxes and other election paraphernalia in his contested precincts," the statements read.
The PET decision which was delayed for more than three weeks also noted that the deadline for the first trance, which amounts to P36.023 million, was on Good Friday, April 13 giving Sen. Marcos less than two days to pay the protest fee, as April 12, 13, and 14 are declared holidays in Manila.
Sen. Bongbong Marcos was quoted as saying in an interview with CNN Philippines that "Pinagbabayad kami ng mahigit 30 million kahit na Semana Santa, kahit na Good Friday, Holy Thursday, buti na lang may mga kaibigan akong nagmagandang loob, sila'y naniniwala na tama, makatarungan ang aking protest kaya naman sila'y nagkaisa," Marcos said.
The son of the late strongman Pres. Ferdinand Macos said that he complied with the order despite disagreements with the calculations and the timing of the order.
Aside from from the P30 million already paid by the BBM camp, the next tranch, which amounts to P30 million is due on July 14, 2017.
