Despite the recent cancellation of the fifth round of the peace negotiations, Communist Party of the Philippines founding chairman Jose Maria Sison on Wednesday said the National Democratic Front panel still had the authority to talk peace with the government.
Sison added that he remained impressed with Duterte's willingness to talk peace with the communist movement.
"The panel continues to be authorized to negotiate. From my side as chief consultant, I'm still impressed with having a President who is willing to go for genuine land reform, national industrialization, and ano... for an independent foreign policy," Sison said in a press conference in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.
"Those are things that you try to keep in mind, there are some bright lights to go by along the way," he added.
Duterte earlier in the day said he would order the arrest of NDF consultants if the New People's Army intensified its offensives against the government while the martial law was in effect in Mindanao.
“I tried to talk to you. As a matter of fact... ni-release ko halos lahat ang mga preso ninyo," Duterte said in a speech at the celebration of the 119th anniversary of the Navy in Davao City.
“And if there is a breakdown in the peace and order here because of the participation of the communists in this war against the ISIS, kung gusto ninyong tumulong sa kabila, magpuntahan na kayo lahat,” he added.
The NDF expressed readiness to continue the peace talks with the Philippine government.
"We are still for the continuation of the peace negotiations, preparing for the fifth round..." NDFP Chairperson Fidel Agcaoili said. —NB, GMA News
