The country’s casino regulator said Thursday it lifted its suspension on Resorts World Manila after it tightened security measures nearly a month after an arson attack there left 38 people killed.
Operations in areas of the casino that were unaffected by the June 2 fire will resume on Thursday, according to its operator, Travellers International Hotel Group.
A lone assailant, who was reportedly suffering from a gambling addiction, fired at TV screens and set the casino floor of Resorts World on fire, killing himself and 37 others due to burns and suffocation.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp said Resorts World hired a new security agency, increased the number of x-ray machines and metal detectors, armed more security guards, reviewed and improved safety protocols, held more security training for employees, had its buildings inspected for structural integrity and secured a fire inspection certificate from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.
PAGCOR said it also took into account the livelihood of the casino’s 6,000-strong workforce, as well as losses in government revenue estimated at P14 million per day or P434 million a month.
The gaming regulator however clarified that the lifting of suspension order does not mean it is disregarding the possible criminal liability of the officers and personnel of Resorts World over the bloody incident.
PAGCOR also called on other casino operators “to continuously improve their safety procedures and protocols” to prevent a repeat of the incident.
