‘Spider-Man’ scales high fences on EDSA to steal from posh village houses

© Provided by GMA News Online spiderman Barangay officials of high-end subdivisions in Quezon City are on the lookout for a burglar, who has gained notoriety for scaling high village fences on EDSA to break into subdivisions and homes of wealthy families. "Ang tawag nila diyan si Spider-Man eh. Kasi, kita mo nag-gigilid sa mga pader," said Supicio Hermogenes, the barangay chairman of Barangay Philam. According to Cesar Apolinario's report on "24 Oras", CCTV footage showed the suspect scaling walls to break into several residences even in broad daylight. One incident had him taking off with tens of thousands of pesos. In another, he was able to take a rifle worth P60,000 from a home. "Kung may nakakakilala diyan eh, ipagbigay alam sa Barangay Pagasa, Philam at West Triangle," Hermogenes said. "Para ma-track namin siya. Beterano na eh," he added. —NB/JST, GMA News

Facebook will use AI to correct skewed 360-degree photos

© Provided by Engadget Ever since Facebook added 360-degree photos to your news feed last year, more and more images of this type have appeared. You can even take and share these full-circle images right from your mobile device, as well, making them even more ubiquitous. Finding them is even easier with Facebook's Gear VR app, too. As reported by VentureBeat , the social network is now using deep neural networks to analyze 360-degree photos to fix the image orientation for a better viewing experience, especially in VR. When you take a 360-degree photo, it's easy to end up with a tilted shot if you don't hold the camera in line with the horizon for the full capture, says VentureBeat 's Blair Hanley Frank. This makes it even worse to view in VR. Facebook's new system — which isn't yet in production use — is based on AlexNet, a convolutional neural network originally created in 2012. VentureBeat also reports that Facebook has a system in place to deal with 36

Strange signals spotted from distant galaxy

This is a newly active period from an unknown source that astronomers labelled FRB 121102. It’s a source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). We still don’t know much about FRBs. They were only first detected in 2001, and the first time we saw one—this one, in fact—repeat was in 2015. FRBs are exactly what they sound like: super fast, really powerful burst of radio signals. But we have no idea what causes them. "The repeating FRB source is an anomaly in the population right now; it's the only one of its kind," says Emily Petroff, a post-doctoral researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. Petroff was not involved in the current observations, but was part of the project that put together the definitive catalogue of Fast Radio Bursts last year . "We're trying hard to find more (either by checking to see if other FRBs repeat, or trying to find more FRBs and monitor them)," Petroff wrote in an email. "Keep in mind that the population is still r

At that time, South Korean officials said the company planned to use the car to develop a self-driving car algorithm that could drive in adverse weather. In a statement to Reuters, Samsung did not say what precisely what it planned to test in the United States but said it secured the permit "in pursuit of a smarter, safer transportation future." BSP sees inflation at 2.6–3.4% in August

"The BSP Department of Economic Research forecast suggests that August 2017 inflation could settle within the 2.6 to 3.4 percent range," it said in a statement sent to reporters via text message. According to the BSP, among the upside drivers are the increases in utility rates, alongside the softening of the local currency. "Increases in domestic petroleum prices, electricity rates in Meralco-serviced areas, and rice prices along with the depreciation of the peso could contribute to upward pressures for the month," it said. Pangilinan-led Meralco imposed a P0.1338 per-kilowatt-hour increase in electricity rates this month, translating to a P27 increase in the total bill of a typical res

Money supply is stable in July—central bank

© Analyn Perez thumb for peso currencies forex The country's money supply remained stable on the back of the sustained demand for credit in July, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Thursday. In an emailed statement, the central bank said domestic liquidity or M3—the broadest measure of money in the financial system—grew by 13.5 percent last month, marginally higher than the 13.3 percent the previous month. In terms of a month-on-month seasonally-adjusted basis, the M3 grew by 1.4 percent. "Demand for credit remained the principal driver of money supply growth," the central bank said. "Growth in bank loans has remained strong on account of lending to key production sectors," it added. — Jon Viktor Cabuenas/VDS, GMA News

Preliminary data from the BSP showed outstanding loans of commercial banks grew by 19.7 percent in July from 19.0 percent in June. "This simply confirms the economic momentum will be sustained by strong lending growth," BSP Deputy Governor for Monetary Stability Sector Diwa Guinigundo told GMA News Online. "This would also explain why BSP needs to do less open market operation as banks have been funding economic activities instead of parking their excess funds with the BSP," Guinigundo added. — VDS, GMA News

Peso slips further on upwardly revised US growth

The local currency shed 4 centavos to close at P51.170:$1 from 51.130 on Wednesday. "This might be [due to the] revised up growth numbers for the US, which sends a message of economic resilience overall," Union Bank of the Philippines chief economist Ruben Carlo Asuncion told GMA News Online. According to a report by Reuters, the gross domestic product of the world's largest economy was revised higher to show a 3 percent annual growth rate in the second quarter, due partly to robust consumer spending as well as strong business investment. Week-on-week, the local unit fell by 9 centavos from P51.08:$1 on August 25. Year-to-date, it lost P1.45 centavos from 49.720 on December 29, the last trading day of 201

DOFF COMMS TEAM The Department of Finance (DOF) has ordered the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) to get to the bottom of a P50-million IT project awarded to a private company at the time of the Aquino administration. A state-of-the-art “Disaster Recovery” (DR) center in a remote location in Visayas was built to back up the operations of the Bureau of Treasury (BTr) in Manila. In a statement released Wednesday by the DOF, National Treasurer Rosalia de Leon deemed the project "incapable" of running the agency's data center. The site was erected in a location that was "not ideal for the Treasury’s critical systems” due to a lack of high-speed fiber cables set up by either PLDT or Globe Telecom in the area, De  Leon noted, saying it "defeated its purpose." No funds were also allotted to cover the operation and maintenance of the center under the 2017 budget. “We also have no budget under the 2017 G

So, as they say – popular names “pa more.” JOSEPH – Its Pinoy equivalent, Jose, is now rarely used… at least in showbiz. Then, there were Jose Romulo, Jose Corazon de Jesus, Jose Mari Gonzalez, Jose Mari Chan, and Jomari Yllana, much younger than the others just mentioned. • ELIZABETH – Think Oropesa, Ramsey, and Bautista. In Hollywood, there’s Elizabeth Taylor, Liz for short. And, of course Queen Elizabeth 11 of England. Despite looking at times like he might retire from the match, Youzhny put in his best performance against the Swiss. But the former top 10 player's fate was all but sealed when he double faulted to hand the Swiss a 4-2 lead in the fifth set and later saw Federer's record against him improve to 17-0. The match marked the first time the 36-year-old third seed had ever started a grand slam tournament with back-to-back five set matches, raising questions about whether he has the stamina necessary

But Syria could finish second and qualify directly for next year's tournament depending on the result of the match between South Korea and Uzbekistan. 59 men accused of links to Marawi siege ordered freed

MANILA, Philippines — Prosecutors have dismissed rebellion complaints against 59 men who were stopped by police and Army troops at two checkpoints in Mindanao and accused of attempting to join ISIS-linked militants who laid siege to Marawi City. Senior government prosecutor Peter Ong said Thursday the complaints filed by the military against the Muslim men were dismissed because of a lack of strong evidence, and authorities were ordered to free all the men. "It is clear that respondents were not committing the crime of rebellion or any crime at the time of their arrests," Ong and two other prosecutors said in their findings, a copy of which was seen by The Associated Press. The men, who traveled in two big groups, may have sparked the suspicion of troops and police at checkpoints because of the Marawi siege, "but suspicion alone is not sufficient to arrest, detain, charge and indict respondents," the prosecutors said. Dutch scientists say human lifespan has limits

Dutch researchers claimed Thursday to have discovered the maximum age "ceiling" for human lifespan, despite growing life expectancy because of better nutrition, living conditions and medical care.Mining data from some 75,000 Dutch people whose exact ages were recorded at the time of death, statisticians at Tilburg and Rotterdam's Erasmus universities pinned the maximum ceiling for female lifespan at 115.7 years.Men came in slightly lower at 114.1 years in the samples taken from the data which spans the last 30 years, said Professor John Einmahl, one of three scientists conducting the study."On average, people live longer, but the very oldest among us have not gotten older over the last thirty years," Einmahl told AFP."There is certainly some kind of a wall here. Of course the average life expectancy has increased," he said, pointing out the number of people turning 95 in The Netherlands had almost tripled."Nevertheless, the maximum ceiling itself

New research finds link between breastfeeding and a reduced risk of endometriosis

A new study has suggested that breastfeeding may have yet another health benefit for women, finding that it could prevent endometriosis. A chronic and incurable gynecological disorder, endometriosis affects approximately 10 percent of women in the United States, causing chronic pelvic pain, painful periods and pain during intercourse. The new study, carried out by investigators at Brigham and Women's Hospital, USA, has found that breastfeeding could reduce a woman's chance of developing the sometimes debilitating condition, which up until now has had very few known modifiable risk factors. The research team used data from the Nurses' Health Study II (NHSII), a prospective cohort study that began in 1989, and follow 72,394 women for more than 20 years. The team looked at how long each woman breastfed, exclusively breastfed (without the introduction of solid food or formula), and how much time passed before their first postpartum period. Why Having A Heart Attack During Sex Is So Dangerous

Nothing gets your heart pumping like passionate sex, but if all that action leads to cardiac arrest, the outcome can be grim. New research has found that men are four times more likely to die if they experience a heart attack during sex than if they experience one at any other time. Why? Because their partners are more likely to delay calling for emergency help due to embarrassment or shock. Time is of the essence for those experiencing a heart attack; a person's chances of survival go down for every minute that passes without professional care, The Independent reported. According to WebMD , the average delay between the start of heart attack symptoms and arriving at a hospital is about two hours, but longer delays lead to worse outcomes, and in some cases, death. © Photo Courtesy of Pixabay People are less likely to call emergency services when someone experiences a heart attack during sex. Can dating websites predict your soulmate?

Although dating websites might claim they can predict attraction between two people, and as much as we might want them to be right, a new study suggests that unravelling the mystery of real-life attraction cannot be done by a computer. Led by Samantha Joel from the University of Utah, the study set out to see if a computer could predict attraction before real-life meetings, including who we will desire online, who will be desirable to others online, and how much desire and attraction there will be between two specific people. The team used data from two samples of speed daters who filled out questionnaires about more than 100 traits and preferences before meeting each other in a series of four-minute dates. Afterwards participants were asked to rate each interaction and the level of interest and sexual attraction they felt toward each each person they met. The researchers then used a cutting-edge machine learning algorithm to see if it was possible to predict attraction between two

New survey on pain management finds differences millennials and their elders

With the rise of smartphones, tablets, and laptops among millennials, the next generation is already experiencing acute and chronic pain from hunching over electronic devices. And now a new nationwide survey commissioned by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) in conjunction with September's Pain Awareness Month has found that millennials (ages 18-36) and Generation X (ages 37-52) are the most likely to report that pain interfered with their daily life including work responsibilities, parenting abilities and participation in family activities. However, to deal with this pain the survey also revealed that many millennials are taking a different approach to the older generations, shunning painkillers in favor of making healthy lifestyle changes such as exercising, eating well, quitting smoking and losing weight. The survey found that compared to the older baby boomers (ages 53-71), millennials were half as likely as to have opted for opioids to manage pain, and if they
