Ancajas hopes PSA plum will be the first of many accolades this year

MANILA, Philippines — It is not hard to see the force behind Jerwin Ancajas' rapid rise to stardom. Having defended his IBF super flyweight title thrice in 2017, Ancajas has earned the admiration of world-renowned Top Rank Promotions, basically putting him on the radar. On Tuesday night, the Davao del Norte got his long-overdue national recognition along with two other athletes during SMC-PSA Awards Night at the Manila Hotel on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old Ancajas — along with Krizziah Lyn Tabora, Carlo Biado — were named Athletes of the Year by Filipino sports scribes. "Sobrang saya ko po na mapabilang sa Athlete of the Year ng PSA. Pangarap ko rin po talaga na maparangalan din dito sa PSA kasi napakaraming Pilipinong atleta na nag-aasam na maparangalan kaya napakasaya po," the pugilist said. "Dagdag na inspirasyon po ito sa akin. Sana magtuloy-tuloy po itong mga nasimulan ko. Sana mabigyan pa ulit ng mga parangal," he added. The charming Ancajas went d

Shots still matter over thin air at Mexico Championship

MEXICO CITY — One of the intriguing aspects of the Mexico Championship is the thin air and the long ball. Chapultepec Golf Club is approaching 7,800 feet above sea level, making it the highest altitude most of the players in this World Golf Championships event will see all year. The Joburg Open was close to 6,000 feet above sea level. The Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nevada, is about the same. But that's not what wins the tournament. Just ask the defending champion. Dustin Johnson still smiles at one of the best shots he hit all year — a sand wedge. His lead was down to one shot when Tommy Fleetwood made birdie on the 18th hole, and Johnson tugged his tee shot into a wicked spot in the bunker. "The ball was below my feet. It was not sitting great," Johnson said. "And I didn't really have anywhere to miss it coming out of where I was. It was either hit a good shot or I was probably going into a playoff." He hit one of the most underappreciated shots

Osvaldo Alonso thinks he’ll be back in late March

© Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports SEATTLE, Wash. — Osvaldo Alonso won’t be ready for this week’s games, but he may not be all that far away from making his return. Talking to the press during Seattle Sounders media day on Wednesday, Alonso said he’s feeling better and thinks he might be back in about a month. “Yes, I think by late March I could be ready and with the team,” Alonso said in Spanish. “That is the goal we are trying for and get back to the field healthy to give my best.” Alonso has only made one appearance since coming off just before halftime on Sept. 27, 2017, and has been unable to fully train during the entire preseason. In total, Alonso was only able to play in 27 of 39 matches last year, including the playoffs. The injury was originally believed to be a quadriceps strain, but a visit to a specialist in Los Angeles revealed that it may actually be a tendon that is causing the injury. After the new diagnosis, the treatment plan apparently changed. The Sounders have b

United States Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun unexpectedly resigned on Wednesday. Blackmun’s “ongoing health issues resulting from prostate cancer” were cited as the reason for his immediate resignation, the USOC said in a statement. His departure also comes as the USOC faces public backlash and three congressional inquiries into the organization's handling of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse case and similar abuse allegations with other sports under the USOC umbrella.  “Given Scott’s current health situation, we have mutually agreed it is in the best interest of both Scott and the USOC that we identify new leadership so that we can immediately address the urgent initiatives ahead of us,” USOC chairman Larry Probst said in a statement. “The

LP to PDP-Laban: Why are you celebrating your anniversary with Chinese officials?

MANILA – Does the Philippines’ ruling party, founded as a bastion for democracy and nationalism during a dictatorship, not see anything wrong with marking its anniversary by wining and dining officials of a foreign government that has been aggressively encroaching upon Philippine territory? This was the question raised by Liberal Party Vice President for External Affairs Erin Tañada, in a statement on the celebration of PDP-Laban’s 36th anniversary. He was reacting to reports by philstar.com that a delegation from China held a symposium and gave out “600 copies of a new book praising Chinese leader Xi Jinping”. The symposium “aimed to introduce ‘Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era’ to the Philippines’ ruling party,” philstar.com reported, quoting China’s state-run news agency Xinhua. “The joint celebration of PDP-Laban’s 36th founding anniversary and launch of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s book leaves a bad taste in the mouth, considering that

"Wala akong sama ng loob sa inyo. Hanggang ngayon, kinalimutan ko na ‘yun. DOLE eyes expansion of OFW deployment ban to other Mideast countries

MANILA, Philippines — The government is looking to expand the deployment ban on overseas Filipino workers, particularly household service workers, to other Middle East nations unless these countries can assure the protection of the workers’ rights and welfare. “For example, in Saudi, it is a common malpractice that the employer trades or switches their worker to other employers. That’s what they call the kafala system and it is always for consideration,” Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said. “We will impose the same restrictions (as in Kuwait) and will consider deployment ban if strengthened protection of our OFWs is not assured,” he added. Intel's PC concept 'hides' a 5G antenna in a plump kickstand

© Cherlynn Low / Engadget MWC 2018 has been gripped with 5G fever, even more intensely than in years past. Intel has gone all out for the show this year, with display upon display of 5G demos dominating its booth. One of the new proofs of concept from the chip maker is a detachable PC streaming a 4K video over a test 5G connection using an early modem. Intel also announced a partnership with Dell, Lenovo, HP and Microsoft to bring 5G-connected PCs with XMM 8000 series modems to market in the second half of 2019. The unnamed concept 2-in-1 is a preview of what those PCs might be capable of, in terms of connection speeds. Intel is not going to sell hardware like this directly to consumers. At the booth, the convertible streamed Wonder Woman on loop, and company reps told Engadget that the demo was hitting 4 to 5 Gbps rates. That's impressive if true (we had no real way of measuring), but remember that the conditions were ideal. The 28GHz spectrum that the PC was tapping for t

Want a meatless burger, but not sure where to start? Use our official taste test as your guide to all the veggie patties lining the freezer section. When we scour the freezer section for the perfect veggie burger, we often look for an adequate amount of both satiating fiber and protein. After all, swapping your regular beef burger for a plant-based patty usually means that you’re willing to compromise flavor for nutrition. However, here at Eat This, Not That!, we’re not advocates of neglecting your palate’s preferences in the name of health; in fact, we believe you can have the best of both worlds. To help your efforts to stick to a veggie-centered diet, convert a carnivore, or save the planet (hey, 460 gallons of water are required to produce a ¼-pound of beef!), I rounded up some of the most popular meatless burgers in the supermarket and graded them based on nutrition, clean ingredients, appearance and texture, and taste. Amazon buys startup Ring in $1 billion deal to run your home security

The deal valued Ring at more than $1 billion, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. Amazon declined to discuss the terms. Ring is set to be one of Amazon's most expensive takeovers, after its $13.7 billion deal last year for Whole Foods Market. The world's largest online retailer believes that selling internet-connected gadgets from Kindle e-readers to its new Cloud Cam will spark more shopping on Amazon.com. Ring offers the company a popular consumer electronics brand that it might not have replicated internally. More importantly, Ring's security devices could work well with Amazon Key, a smart lock and camera system that lets delivery personnel put packages

Google tests Flutter toolkit for better cross-platform apps

© Provided by Engadget Building apps for both Android and iOS can be a pretty time-intensive task, so it's no wonder that many developers often build for one platform first, followed by the other. There are workarounds to this, such as using Facebook's React Native that lets you build apps just with Javascript. Last year, however, Google introduced its own solution called Flutter. First revealed at I/O, Flutter is an open-source toolkit that lets devs create native apps for both platforms quickly and easily. Plus, it's also compatible with Fuchsia, Google's upcoming OS. Now, at Mobile World Congress, Google has announced that Flutter is officially in beta and is thus ready for wider adoption. [embedded content] It's only been a few months, but Google has made a lot of improvements to Flutter since then. It's now compatible with the iPhone X for one thing, and it also has screen reader support, right-to-left text, localization, inline video support and more.

The Moon is getting 4G cell service and live video feed

© NASA/HARRISON SCHMITT Astronaut Gene Cernan drives the lunar roving vehicle in front of the Lunar Module in 1972. On Tuesday, German telecommunications company Vodafone announced a new partnership with Nokia to bring 4G coverage to the Moon next year. It's part of an initiative run by a German company called PTScientists, which wants to land the first non-governmental mission on the Moon. If you're wondering why precisely the Moon needs a 4G network—which, to be clear, is better connectivity than people can access in parts of Africa right now—it ties back to that first nongovernmental mission. Specifically, the company wants to land two rovers on the Moon to examine the Apollo 17 vehicle astronauts left behind the last time humans visited, in 1972. That will put the equipment on the near side of the Moon, where it's much easier to land and communicate with Earth. But PTScientists has its eye on sending a whole lot of data home—not just scientific data, but also a liv

ASUS’ ZenFone 5 stretches the limits of the term ‘AI’

© Provided by Engadget As expected, ASUS officially revealed its new ZenFone 5 in Barcelona today (February 27) and if you don't mind I'm going to skip my usual meandering intro. The company talked up a handful of AI features in its latest midrange smartphone, but I think ASUS is throwing around the word "AI" haphazardly. More on that later though: Let's get the usual hands-on stuff out of the way first. Yes, with its notched 6.2-inch screen and its vertically mounted dual camera, the ZenFone 5 looks quite a bit like an iPhone. (Just, you know, bigger and with a striking finish on its rear.) The screen is particularly nice: Colors appear much brighter and punchier than I had hoped, and it's generally a pleasure to gaze at, as long as you're not looking for a super high-resolution panel. Inside, you'll find one of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 636 chipsets with either 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage or 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. While it isn't the fas

Sikur's new encrypted smartphone has been tried and tested by hackers, to ensure users' cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, are safe from theft.  Such a device may have only appealed to those carrying around delicate corporate data or sensitive government documents a few years ago. But in today's world of hackers, set on trying their luck in a cryptocurrency market worth over $460 billion, a lot more people have a lot more to lose. SIKURPhone is ultimately a practical choice rather than a flashy one -- the specs remain mediocre and nowhere near those of a flagship item.
