Facebook changes algorithm to curb 'tiny group' of spammers

© REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer/Files Facebook logo is seen at a start-up companies gathering at Paris' Station F in Paris Facebook Inc said on Friday it was changing the computer algorithm behind its News Feed to limit the reach of people known to frequently blast out links to clickbait stories, sensationalist websites and misinformation. The move is another step by the world's largest social network to weed out spam, a battle Facebook has fought for years but that gained urgency after hoax news stories spread widely during last year's U.S. presidential campaign. Facebook said the change would reduce the influence of a "tiny group" of people it has identified who share vast amounts of low-quality public posts daily. Only about 0.1 percent of people who share more than 50 posts a day fall into that category, the company said. The change would affect only links shared by those people, not their photos or other posts, the company said. "Our research shows tha

The Moto X4 may be the first non-Google phone to get Project Fi

© Provided by Engadget There's only been one problem with Project Fi's well-received phone carrier network: too few phones. Until now, the only devices that work with it have been Google's own Nexus and Pixel handsets. It looks like that's about to change, though. Project Fi teased a release on Twitter, announcing "a new Fi-compatible device at a mid-tier price from one of our partners later this year." VentureBeat  reports this device will be Lenovo's Moto X4, which will likely become the very first non-Google phone on the Google Fi system. We know relatively little about the X4, other than a leaked marketing photo that surfaced this past May. According to a video leaked on Reddit , it's possible that the device will be an higher-end mid-range phone with a Snapdragon 660 processor, a 3,800mAh battery, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a fingerprint reader. Google Fi impressed us with its low cost, ease of use and the disruptive ability to use Wi

A discovery in Orion hints at how life began on Earth

© Photo: ASIAA/Jung-Shan Chang An artist’s concept shows an atmosphere of complex organic molecules within a disk of material that is ringed around a young star still forming in constellation Orion. Scientists could be watching alien life form in Orion — using one of the most powerful telescopes on Earth, they’ve detected the building blocks of a habitable planet swarming with life in orbit around a star forming in that constellation. A disk of material around the protostar is shaped like a hamburger, with two bright features like a bun sandwiching a darker cloud of material, the international team reported in the Astrophysical Journal . The whole thing contains complex organic molecules in its atmosphere above and below the disk that would be needed to support life later in the system’s development. The group says it is the first time scientists have made such a discovery so early in a star’s formation and it can tell us how life began on earth. The complex organic molecules, lik

Resorts World to resume operations after suspension lifted

The country’s casino regulator said Thursday it lifted its suspension on Resorts World Manila after it tightened security measures nearly a month after an arson attack there left 38 people killed. Operations in areas of the casino that were unaffected by the June 2 fire will resume on Thursday, according to its operator, Travellers International Hotel Group. A lone assailant, who was reportedly suffering from a gambling addiction, fired at TV screens and set the casino floor of Resorts World on fire, killing himself and 37 others due to burns and suffocation. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp said Resorts World hired a new security agency, increased the number of x-ray machines and metal detectors, armed more security guards, reviewed and improved safety protocols, held more security training for employees, had its buildings inspected for structural integrity and secured a fire inspection certificate from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. PAGCOR said it also took into

Palace hits Human Rights Watch: Don’t brush aside drug war gains

Malacañang on Thursday hit back at international rights group Human Rights Watch (HRW) for calling the first year of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte a “human rights calamity.” Presidential Communications Operations Office Assistant Secretary Ana Marie Banaag told reporters that HRW seemed to have overlooked the gains achieved under Duterte’s presidency, especially in the war on drugs. “We don’t feel good about the comments of the Human Rights Watch… We have to realize that the president stood and won on a platform of genuine change,” Banaag said told reporters in a news conference. “Human Rights Watch should not brush aside all the programs especially on the enforcement side [of the war on drugs].” The New York-based group said Duterte’s “murderous ‘war on drugs,’ drug-related overcrowding of jails, and the harassment and prosecution of drug war critics has caused a steep decline in respect for basic rights since Duterte’s inauguration on June 30, 2016.” Banaag, ho

PCSO's Balutan, Atong Ang clash over STL earnings

© Provided by GMA News Online --- Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) General Manager Alexander Balutan has locked horns with gaming consultant Charlie "Atong" Ang over PCSO's P5.018-billion earnings from the expanded Small Town Lottery (STL) from January to May. Ang accused Balutan of "sugarcoating" the actual sales of STL, saying  since STL has a potential gross revenue of P5 billion a month, earnings from the five-month period should be higher than P5 billion or at least P25 billion. "With General Manager Balutan's statement, niloloko lang niya ang gobyerno," Ang said in a statement Thursday. "I'm challenging them to show the breakdown and I will prove that they are sugarcoating the actual  sales of STL." Balutan flatly denied Ang's accusation. "There is no way that the government can under-declare its revenues under the expanded STL," he said. "There is no sugarcoating that the PCSO is already ga

Philippines’ Duterte rides high after ‘rough’ first year

Rodrigo Duterte ends his first year as Philippine president on Friday as a hugely popular leader, after taking Filipinos on a promised “rough ride” of drug war killings and foreign policy U-turns. Duterte has been heavily criticised for his unprecedented crackdown on drugs, which has claimed thousands of lives, and he marks 12 months in office enduring the biggest crisis of his rule as Islamist militants occupy parts of a southern city. The 72-year-old has also upended decades of foreign policy stability, launching verbal bombs against traditional ally the United States while steering the Philippines closer to authoritarian regimes in China and Russia. Yet an overwhelming majority of Filipinos support him, according to a series of surveys by pollsters over the past 12 months, with the most recent one showing 75 percent were satisfied with his administration’s performance. “People like the man,” Ricardo Abad, head of sociology and anthropology at Ateneo University in Manila, told AF

Maute’s days in Marawi are ‘numbered’: Moro Islamic Liberation Front

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) played down the Maute group’s reported plan to establish a province in Mindanao under an ISIS caliphate, saying its days in Marawi were “numbered.” “We do not see any possibility at this point in time that the creation of a ‘Wilayah’ (province) would succeed, because there has been no caliphate established,” MILF chairman Murad Ebrahim told ABS-CBN News said in a mix of English and Filipino. Omar Maute and his brother Abdullah had been part of the MILF before they embraced violent extremism after studying in Jordan and Egypt. After returning to the Philippines, the two asked to put up their own group under the MILF, Murad recalled. “Sabi naman wala namang problema dahil MILF naman kayo. But then after they tried to form a group, nakita namin na iba yung kanilang mga polisiya, iba yung kanilang mga activities,” he said. (But then, after they tried to form a group, we saw that their policy was different, their activities were different.) The

Red Sox release former Cardinal Craig

The Boston Red Sox and Allen Craig seemed like a match made in Heaven; high-OBP guy with serious pop heading to the organization other than the Cardinals that most valued his talents? In a John Lackey deal? Seemed like a slam dunk. Unfortunately, things never go as scripted. Arroyo says Duterte ‘awesome’ in first year

By: Ben R. Rosario His demonstration of an “awesome leadership” and resolve to make good on his campaign promises were among the positive impressions that President Duterte gave one of his predecessors, former President now Pampanga Rep. Gloria M. Arroyo. But unlike Arroyo, the Makabayan bloc, represented by Left-leaning lawmakers belonging to the pro-Duterte majority bloc of the House of Representatives, is not fully impressed with the President’s performance in his first year. Reps. Carlos Zarate (Bayan Muna party-list), Antonio Tinio and France Castro (ACT Teachers partylist), Emmi de Jesus and Arlene Brosas (Gabriela partylist), as well as the Kabataan partylist aired dissatisfaction over many of Duterte’s programs. Arroyo cited Duterte’s “sustained efforts” in boosting the morale of soldiers and policemen who have been gallantly fighting Islamic State-linked Maute terrorists in Marawi City. She said Duterte’s regular visits to the soldiers and his order raising financial be
