R. Tiglao Reveals Rappler Getting Foreign Funds that Allegedly Violates the Philippine Constitution

Veteran journalist and one of the country's most respected columnist wring for the Manila Times, Rigorberto Tiglao made a very interesting expose on how Rappler allegedly violates the Philippine Constitution by getting funding from foreign firms such as Omidyar Network and North Base Media.

In the latest commentary written by Tiglao on his column for the Manila Times he revealed that Rappler violates the constitution as he cited Article XVI, Section 11 of the Philippine constitution that says: "The ownership of mass media shall be limited to citizens of the Philippines."

According Tiglao, Rappler.com had been one of former President Aquino's supporters and now became Pres. Rody Duterte's fierce critic. During the Aquino administration, Rappler boasted that two American companies, Omidyar Network, Inc and North Base Media made substantial investments in Rappler.

Rappler allegedly received millions of dollars of funding from North Base Media, the very first in Asia according to TechinAsia. North Base Media is founded by Marcus Brauchli, Sasa Vucinic and Stuart Karle, former COO of Reuters.

Omidyar Network is one of the fastest growing media company in the world, funded by the French American Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay, one of the world's biggest online retailers.

The North Base Media on their part stated on their official website that the company "focused on media, journalistic and digital-driven opportunities in growth markets." Both Omidyar and North Base claimed that their ownership with Rappler are not motivated by pecuniary goals, Omidyar is a philanthropic enterprises while North Base only "advice on digital trends and media in Asia."

Rigorberto Tiglao also questioned the investments of both Omidyar Network and North Base to Rappler and why is it that the company refused to disclose the amount of their non-for-profit investments to the Filipino company.

DOF opposes tiered approach to tax on sugary drinks

"We oppose the tiered approach. Meaning 'yung first seven grams will be tax free and then after that would be taxable," Finance Undersecretary Karl Chua said during the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) Economic Forum in Manila on Friday.
